Despite being a music scholar (before I was a lawyer), a recent concert in London showed me something I’ve never seen before.
A cellist walked on stage, picked up his cello, and started playing it…like a guitar.
Same instrument. Same strings. But a completely different sound.
I was completely captivated. Not just by the musicality of it, but by the way he was bucking the trend of “normal” cello playing.
Most of us would never think to play a cello like that, because we’re conditioned to follow the default way of doing things.
When Following the Standard Playbook Becomes the Problem
As lawyers, we have the same conditioning.
Law firm owners usually follow the traditional model they learned from the lawyers before them: take more matters, bill more hours, work harder, add more people, repeat.
And then they hit the wall.
Revenue grows, but profit margin stays flat. Or worse, margin decreases.
Workload increases, but freedom disappears.
The firm looks bigger on paper, but the owner is more tired than ever.
It’s not about changing the instrument. It’s about playing the one you already have, differently.
Which means your firm could produce a very different result, without needing more staff, more hours, or more cases.
