I FRACTURED MY FIBULA AND HERE'S WHAT IT TAUGHT ME ABOUT BUSINESS

I heard the bone crunch before I felt the pain.

One moment I was gliding down an easy blue run, already planning my post-ski routine. The next moment, I was sprawled in the snow, having caught a ski edge trying to avoid a rope I’d spotted too late.

The diagnosis: fractured fibula. Day 2 of my 7-day ski trip.

When Your Plan Meets Reality

Fast forward to last week. I’m standing in a London hotel conference room in a walking boot with crutches, about to deliver an all-day Mastermind workshop to my Profitable Practice law firm clients.

Could I walk around the room engaging with everyone? No. Could I carry my own materials or travel independently? No.

But here’s what I could do: deliver every single session I’d planned. As I told my clients, “Luckily, my mouth wasn’t injured!”

The workshop happened because I had something I didn’t fully appreciate until that moment: a team.

My husband drove me to London the night before. My team handled logistics. Even clients helped, bringing me chairs and cups of tea.

Without them? Cancelled event. Six weeks of recovery. Significant business disruption.

Instead? No business interruption.

Your team isn’t just there to do the tasks you don’t have time for. They’re your business continuity plan.

Think of them like a Formula 1 pit crew. The racing driver can’t win the race on their own – but the team has to be well-trained and have good systems to follow in order to be effective.

The Question You Need to Ask

What happens to your law firm if you can’t work “as normal” for six weeks?

Illness, family emergency, burnout – any one of a dozen reasons you might need to step back temporarily?

Here’s the truth many law firm owners don’t want to admit: You think of your team as people who “do stuff” rather than true partners. You don’t ask for help when you need it. Or maybe you don’t have a team at all because you’re convinced you can do everything yourself.

I’m sometimes guilty of the first two. This accident was a wake-up call.

What I’m Taking Forward

My team could support me more than I realised – but only because I asked them and let them.

I also learned to leave more wriggle room in my calendar. (The unexpected can happen at any time.)

And I focused on what I could do rather than wallowing in what I couldn’t. That’s what got me through the Mastermind Day and kept my business moving forward.

Your Freedom Firm Architecture isn’t just about profit and client attraction. It’s about building a practice that can function even when you’re not at 100% capacity.

Because life happens. And the question isn’t whether you’ll face disruption – it’s whether your business can handle it when you do.

Luckily I’m healing well. Six weeks in the boot, then physiotherapy. And yes, I’m already planning next year’s ski trip. Because that’s what business owners do – we adapt, we keep going, and we make sure we’ve got the right team around us to make it possible.

Take Action: What’s one thing you could do this week to make your firm more resilient?

Document a key process? Have a conversation about contingency planning? Admit you need more support?
Have a think: What’s your biggest vulnerability right now if you had to step back unexpectedly?

And If you’re a law firm owner who isn’t yet part of Profitable Practice but wants clarity, control, and freedom in your firm, this is your moment.

On 4th February, I’m running a 1-day FastTrack workshop where you’ll build your own Freedom Firm Architecture — so you can:

  • Work with the clients you choose
  • Work the hours you choose
  • Create the financial freedom you deserve

This is an intimate, hands-on day for a maximum of 20 law firm owners — and just 1 ticket remains.

If you’re ready to stop adapting on your own and start building with the right structure and support, secure your place now.
